Trailer Watch: Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts

Josh Radnor is the weakest link on How I Met Your Mother’s script-transcending cast — his personality is like Wonder bread dipped in skim milk. So when his feature writing and directing debut happythankyoumoreplease got solid reviews, I cocked my left eyebrow, made a mental note of it and went on with my life.

His new film, Liberal Arts, doesn’t look like anything new plot-wise: “emotionally stunted man meets perfectly well-adjusted woman who gets him to open up” thing has started to feel like a (tired) genre unto itself. Even the twist seen here in the trailer — that this may or may not end up as a romantic connection (and probably doesn’t) — seems familiar, reminding me of the Natalie Portman subplot in Beautiful Girls or Lost in Translation.

But I’ve long said that plot is unimportant — that it’s not what you do, but how you do it — and the presence Elizabeth Olsen (as the too-young girl of his dreams), Allison Janney and Richard Jenkins made this interesting. And as it turned out, the trailer has a pitch-perfect tone, and there are just enough hints of something smart, something maybe just a little bit deep… so I’m intrigued.

Trailer Watch: Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik is back, once again with Brad Pitt in the leading role. In Killing Them Softly, an adaptation Cogan’s Trade by George V. Higgins, Pitt stars as a mob enforcer charged with tracking down a pair of small-time crooks (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) who’ve robbed a mob card game.

The film premiered at Cannes earlier this year, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or and scored some positive reviews.

Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard and James Gandolfini co-star in the October 19th release.

Trailer Watch: The Cabin in the Woods Trailer 2

A new trailer for Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s long-delayed Cabin in the Woods has hit the interwebs thanks to FearNET.

The R-rated horror flick stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, and it hits theaters on April 13. You know you’re gonna watch it. Joss Whedon, man. Joss Whedon.

Trailer Watch: Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson are together again in The Rum Diary

On October 28, 2011, Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson are back together in Withnail & I director Bruce Robinson’s adaptation of The Rum Diary. Fantastic choice of director (particularly if Terry Gilliam weren’t an option), and this trailer looks like a lot of fun.

Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovani Ribisi and Richard Jenkins round out the cast.
