Multiplex: the Card Game art by Mathew Van Dinter

Above is the first piece of art from the Multiplex-inspired card game that I’m working on for my Game Design class (as part of my Graphic Design MFA). This card illustration is by Mathew Van Dinter, who just recently launched a “retro sci fi” graphic novel called Unearth. Check that out! It’s very young (only two pages so far), but his art is clearly fantastic, so it should be a hell of a lot of fun.

Although most of the fake movies have titles and descriptions, since I saw from his samples that he liked dinosaurs, I just asked him to do an “Adventure” movie with a dinosaur in some capacity, and he ran with it.

If you’d like to contribute a film still like this to the Multiplex card game, please e-mail me some LINKS to your samples (no attachments!) — gordon at multiplexcomic.com, of course — and also let me know some genres of film you might be interested in doing. I need the art by the end of the month — so it’s a quick turn-around! Please do not volunteer if you cannot meet OR BEAT this deadline or follow directions, because I won’t be able to use your art and you will have wasted your time, and I will feel badly about it, but that’s just how it is. (If you’re interested in doing more than one, that would be awesome, too, but we’ll take it one at a time.)

Now, the shitty part is, because this is a student project, there is a zero dollar budget. However, there’s a chance that if playtesting goes well, I’ll be publishing this as a proper game next year (or so), in which case all of the artists will be paid to license their work. And, of course, you would keep the copyright.

I cannot use everybody, of course. As a graduate student, there is a minimum level of drawing ability that I need to require for this artwork — it has to be professional looking. And there are only so many of each genre of movie to go around, so you might be good enough, but just not suitable. If I don’t contact you with a movie (or some options), please don’t take it personally.

The Multiplex: Chapter 9 eBook is now available!

The Multiplex: Chapter 9 eBook is now available! Chapter 9 contains strips #165–189 from the Multiplex archives, plus seven bonus comics not found in the archives, fleshing out the narrative and adding so many lulz you wouldn’t even believe man.

I’ll be starting on Chapter 10 as soon as I finished Thursday’s comic.

Now taking PayPal contributions toward the Book 2 Project

Help fund the production, printing, and distribution of the second Multiplex print collection by donating to the Multiplex: There and Back Again Project at the Multiplex Store! Donated funds will be used in the same manner as the funds raised by the Book 2 Kickstarter Project which has now ended, only now PayPal users (and other people who can’t or don’t care to use Kickstarter or Amazon Payments) can get involved. These are characterized as donations, because PayPal has a policy that all purchases must be shipped within 30 days. Obviously, the book will not be ready then.

The “prices” (donation amounts) are slightly different from the Kickstarter rewards in that the Kickstarter rewards had some amount of shipping built into their required minimum pledge, and extra shipping was required for international backers. Here, the shipping will be based on an estimate (which is usually pretty accurate), so international backers will be paying an estimated shipping amount that may be higher (or lower) than Kickstarter backers were required to pay. US contributors will find them identical in “cost” to the Kickstarter rewards, once shipping is added on at checkout.

The estimated publication date for Multiplex: There and Back Again is currently February 2013. This is subject to change.

At this point, I’ve only made the most popular Kickstarter rewards available for purchase, and some of them are unnecessary by the fact that you can just order Multiplex: Enjoy Your Show or the Chapters 1–5 eBooks separately from your donation (and also have Book 1 shipped immediately, rather than wait for Book 2 to be published, as Kickstarter Backers do). If there were any other Kickstarter rewards you would have liked to see, simply leave a comment here or e-mail Gordon, and I’ll set it up for you.

Multiplex First Appearance T-shirts — Maybe? and I am going to blog about your insolence.

Brian’s Maybe? T-shirt is available again for the first time in a few years, and — in honor of the Blogger’s recent return to the strip — I’ve added a new shirt with the Blogger’s popular line, “I am going to blog about your insolence.” Both design (like all of my T-shirts now) are printed on demand by Threadsafe.

And don’t forget! There’s a sale on original sketches and vector portraits in the Multiplex Store through next Friday! All proceeds go to my accountant and the IRS!
