Thomas Jane is back as the Punisher (unofficially) in “Dirty Laundry”

Thomas Jane previously starred in Lionsgate’s 2004 The Punisher, which didn’t do very well in the theaters or with critics — at least, not well enough to warrant a sequel by the same team. But the 2008 Punisher: War Zone fared even worse.

At this year’s SDCC, Jane premiered a ten minute “fan film” starring himself as Frank Castle once again, called “Dirty Laundry.” Jane explained: “I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in — a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish. We hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

Honestly, it’s… uh… not very good for most of its running time — but once the killing starts (oh, and it’s pretty violent), it gets fun. Sorry to spoil the fact that he’s the Punisher, by the way. It’s mean to be an awesome reveal at the end, but… really, it doesn’t make a difference.

  1. I thought it was an excellent short. Made me really want an (HBO/Showtime/Whatever) tv series of the Punisher that brought Jane back. Have one that is him on the road in that van, set it up so that it is only 2-3 seasons long and violent as all get out.

Agree that it runs a bit long, it could have been trimmed down to maybe 8mins or so, but once it erupts, oh man is it great to watch Castle beat the shit out of people.

Would have liked some original music to it.

    • What I thought was dumb was how he basically let a woman get assaulted and a kid get beat up while he had his thumb up his ass. If that was Frank for real, this short would’ve been a lot shorter, six months sober or not. :)

      • Yeah, I thought he let things go on a bit to long as well, still satisfied when he starts breaking bones.

I think that was an attempt to illustrate some despair related apathy, and him overcoming it. It sort of works for me, if its meant to connect to the last film, as a transition from being revenge driven in to a grander purpose. Perhaps it dragged on a bit much, tho.

  2. Graham Clark says:

The punisher seems to one of those characters that are hard to get perfect on film. Maybe he’s just meant to be seen in segments like hulk

    • I loved The Incredible Hulk (the series and the Ed Norton movie). Punisher is waaay more one note. Hulk, you just need to make Banner interesting and you’re golden.
