Trailer Watch: The final John Carter (of Mars) trailer

The final John Carter trailer, and it’s easily the best one yet. The action is great, the effects look pretty seamless, and it’s the only one to actually give you any idea what the plot is.

I know a lot of people have been rumbling about how old hat the film looks — a gladiator bit, giant CG armies, and all that — but I have enough faith in Andrew Stanton (WALL·E, Finding Nemo) to tell any story well. We’ll know how right (or wrong) I am on March 9th.

Thanks to The Beat for the heads up!

  1. Is it me or is the audio all wonky when people are talking?  Like they took 5 different lines of Mark Strong dialogue to make it sound like he’s saying something he never says in the movie.

I’ve never read the book(s), but it looks like a standard scifi epic about traveling to a far off world to save an alien species from being destroyed by a different alien species.

    • It’s not just you. They do that kind of shit in trailers all the time.

As far as the “standard sci fi epic” thing, it’s gonna be hard for them to get around the fact that while the books were among the first of its kind, we’ve seen a billion and one rehashes of rehashes of this kind of thing by now. Still, plot is overrated. Storytelling is king.

I have read the books…and it looks very much like they are mucking with the story significantly. Of course.

There is no way they could NOT mess with the books in this day and age.  It has been a while but if I remember correctly the role of woman in the books was to be pretty brave and wait to be rescued.

Not something that would go down well now…
